Vendor Biography

Sandra Dulcie Rideout is an Inuk woman of Nunatsiavut, born and raised in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL

 

Upon completing a two-year Secretarial Science Program at CONA in 1991 she gained employment with the Department of National Defence which is now retired after 30 years.

 

Sandra is a true believer in her culture and exercises her traditional way of life by fishing, hunting and most notably, her love for the art of sewing.

 

Sandra has been sewing for years. Her mom, Vera Best and Grandmother Dulcie Montague were her biggest influences to the sewing world.

 

Sandra started sewing at about the age of 10; she started off hand sewing little things like throw pillows with people’s names on them.

 

When her own children were small, she started knitting and crocheting then as her children grew so did Sandra’s interest in the traditional crafts. She got interested in slipper making and from there, traditional native mukluks, gauntlets, cuffs and leather/fur hats. Sandra has developed and uses her own pattern when making her mukluks and leather hats, seal skin items: vest; neck ties/bow ties, head bands, scarfs, belts, capes and coats.

 

Sandra was hired to teach seal skin cuff making mitts 6 different class to a group of ladies of the Nunatsiavut membership and the local Friendship centre. She was selected to teach a workshop in Whitehorse June 2023 and Torngats National Park Base Camp August 2023; December 2023 was selected to attend Education Mission with Craft Alliance Atlantic, in Washington, DC plus other organizations such as Them Days Magazine, cultural day at middle schools. May 2024 invited/attended the Petapan First light Symposium 2024 held in PEI for a 5-day event. Sandra attended SWAIA August 2024 which is the largest Indian Market in the world, she also was invited to attended for 5 day Sustainable Fibre Arts Conference event held in Gros Morne National park September 2024.

 

Though Sandra leads a very busy home she still finds the time to do the sewing she loves and carry on the tradition taught to her by her mother and grandmother.
